The event was basically for youths from around the city and roundabout young people were invited. They want Sheffield to become a city of culture, so they asked us what we thought about “my place”, “my spaces” and another one that i can’t now remember!
They asked us basically what we thought culture was – and we were a bit nervous because we didn’t know what to say and as we went around the circle I began to think of graffiti art and Kelly said drugs! It was interesting – culture is whatever you want it to be. James said “industry” because sheffield was full of old steel industry buildings and it was a part of our identity. We thought that was bad!
We wrote on flipcharts our ideas and we put that we should have more money for hostels especially so we can work and not pay high rent, more lights in parks, more activities free in the city and cannabis to be decriminalised! Someone put fairy lights in parks…and when we looked into it it was Shauna and we all laughed and said “yeah, that makes sense!”
Overall, I was happy to be involved because I got to put my ideas forward to make Sheffield a city of culture.
